Resumen

FINDING OF THE THELAZIA NEMATODE IN A DOG FROM SALAMANCA; SPAIN Herein the case of one dog from San Martín del Castañar (Salamanca, Spain) with itching in the left eye which provoked a frequent scratching is presented. By the ocular examination fi ve white worms in the conjunctival sac were observed, and collected by means of a forceps after anaesthesia. The staining with cotton-blue lactophenol allowed the identifi cation of the worms as belonging to the genus Thelazia spp. The presence of embryonated eggs in the uterus indicated all the specimens were females, hypothesis supported by the absence of the cloacal papilles belonging to the males. This fi nding underlines the need for taking into account the infection by Thelazia in the differential diagnosis of ocular troubles affecting dogs, especially during the summer periods.
