Abstract
Random dot stereograms have shown that retinal disparities alone are enough to produce a vivid depth perception. However, they raised a new question: how does the visual system solve the massive ambiguity problem that appears when a dot in one eye's view is going to be matched with another one in the other eye's view? We have observed that the cells sensitive to correlated stereograms (41 %) are also sensitive to uncorrelated stereograms. However, responses to both situations are clearly different. This indicates that the visual system is capable of solving the ambiguity problem at early stages of the visual processing.
