Abstract

We evaluated the efficacy of focal and grid laser photocoagulation in the treatment of diabetic macular edema in 207 eyes from 134 diabetic patients. We studied which variables (demographic, endocrinologic retinopathy or treatment related) could conditionate visual acuity results 3 and 6 month after laser photocoagulation, using for this purpose a multivariate analysis (discriminant analysis). Selected variables 3 month after photocoagulation were: sex, initial visual acuity, initial diagnostic retinopathy, focal or grid pattern and wavelength used. 6 month after photocoagulation other variables related with diabetes were added. When we introduced a new variable, the pattern of leakage before treatment, results were similar, and this variable was selected only in 6 month results after treatment.
