Objective To understand the changes made by nurses in their clinical practice since the adoption of the Virginia Henderson model and the GACELA computer software. Methods This is a qualitative and exploratory-interpretative study from the perspective of the Grounded Theory. It was developed over two time periods, during the years 2004 and 2016. The participants were nurses from four hospitals from the Xerencia de Xestión Integrada in A Coruña. The data collection was carried out through semistructured interviews. Its analysis was accomplished by following the principles of the grounded theory. The categories were grouped according to Strauss and Corbin’s paradigm. Findings 15 participants were included in the 2004 study, and 12 were included in the 2016 study. In the 2004 study, a total of 20 categories were identified, related to two phenomena, which were integrated in the central category: Working with the nursing assistance process and the model modifies the usual practice. In the 2016 study 14 categories related to one phenomenon were identified. The main category was: There is no way back. Conclusions Working with the nursing care computer software GACELA turns nursing care into a regulated and institutionalized practice. The coexistence of different professional roles among the nurses affects the joint effort in patient care at hospitalization units negatively. The GACELA software has caused a professional renewal and changes in the organization of the institutional nursery activity.
