Objectives: An evaluation is made of the clinical, topographic and histological characteristics of odontomas. Study design: A retrospective study is conducted of 46 odontomas treated in a reference hospital serving a population of 1,100,000 inhabitants. Patient age and sex was documented, along with tumor location, clinical manifestations, the existence of associated tooth retention, size and histopathological findings. Results: The mean patient age was 21.3 years (61 % females and 39 % males), and 37 % of the lesions were diagnosed in the second decade of life. In 52 % of the cases the odontomas were located in the upper jaw, and the remaining 48 % in the mandible; 46 % were located between the definitive canines. Only 4 % of the patients presented symptoms at the time of diagnosis. Most patients (74 %) presented associated dental retention - the most commonly implicated tooth being the permanent canine. The mean greater diameter of the lesions was 15.4 mm. Histopathologically, 15 lesions corresponded to odontomas (without specification), while of the rest of cases 45 % were compound and 55 % complex. Conclusions: The epidemiology of odontomas is characterized by an important alteration in the eruption of the definitive canine. The condition is typically asymptomatic, and the incidence is similar in both sexes.
