Resumo

The use of the diode laser in the second stage of osseointegrated implant surgery has a number of advantages over conventional excisional techniques using a scalpel. These advantages include: speed, coagulation and disinfection of the surgical zone, rapid healing, and selective use of anaesthesia, such advantages may support the use of the diode laser in a protocoled manner. This work is a prospective observational study of 60 consecutive patients who underwent second stage surgery to uncover osseointegrated implants provided at the Teaching Unit of Oral Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Oral, Maxillofacial and Implant Unit of the Sanatorio de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza of Santiago de Compostela.
