Abstract

The large number of antibiotic-resistant isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae in recent years has greatly increased the interest in the study of the mechanisms that allow these bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics. This research covers the effect of different β-lactams (cefoxitin, meropenem, imipenem and ertapenem) on the frequency of occurrence and selection of mutants in K. pneumoniae, as well as the various changes experienced by these mutants. Furthermore, our research has encompassed the study of the role of different outer membrane proteins on antimicrobial resistance, specifically; the role of the protein LamB and the porin OmpK26, whose relationship with that resistance was first identified in this research paper. This is the reason why this behavior has been widely analyzed in such resistance as the biological fitness in porin deficiency in K. pneumoniae.
