Abstract

Both the obvious population aging and the female’s employment situation are actually transforming the way and standards of care provided to our elders. Old people used to stay at home, but they are getting more and more institutionalised at present time due to the lack of time of their relatives and caregivers. It is widely known that families do their very best before asking for external caregiving resources. Unfortunately, this kind of extra help is not sufficient as from official sources. Moreover, the basic objective of a proper health and social primary attention, i.e. to keep the elders at home but appropriately supported, is not being achieved. Therefore, it is necessary to break the currrent routine of extra help and it is mandatory to progress beyond this stage and work out new ways of action, so that relatives/caregivers contribute to sustain the system. Our project Telegerontology is a step further in the tele-assistance field, but clearly differentiated. We aim at tackling different issues at the very elders’ place, so that the need to become institutionalised is delayed.
