Resumen

lntroduction and purpose: The aim is to analyze the influence of some public programmes on private restorative dental demand. Methods: In the schoolyear 96/97 a field-trial was started in Granada (Spain), with four groups of schoolchildren 6-7-yr of age: Sealant (applied in the Health Center, n=121), Sealant+Fluoride (+ fluoride varnish applied in the schools, n=119), Fluoride (n=137) and Control (n=95). All children were explored at the beginning and 6 months later. The increase in private restorative dentistry is analyzed through the Restoration lndex (filled teeth divided by the total decayed + filled teeth). Results and Conclusions: The restoration index did increase in all groups. The mean increase (± standard deviation) in filled teeth was higher in Sealant (0.54±1.57) and Sealant+Fluoride (0.55±1.27) groups, than in Fluor (0.23±0.99) and Control (0.19±0.80) groups. There were no significant differences between Sealant+Fluoride and Sealant groups, neither between Fluoride and Control groups. lt is concluded that a public sealant programme within a Health Center leads to an increase in private restorative dentistry, while a school programme of professional topical fluoride application (varnish) does not.
