Resumo
An increased risk of some systemic diseases is present in patients with periodontal disease, although it remains unknown if this association is due to a causal relationship. This thesis aims to clarify the relationship between periodontal disease and the level of inflammatory markers ultrasensitive C-reactive protein and fibrinogen and pro-oxidant markers malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-2´-deoxyguanosine, as well as the action of topical doxycycline in periodontal treatment. We studied a population with periodontal disease that was going to undergo treatment and that, after three months, should allow evidence of the effectiveness and compare two groups of patients, with doxycycline and control. Results show that periodontal parameters improve in both groups, with fibrinogen showing a significant reduction in the first group. Likewise, a non-significant correlation was observed between the levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine in urine and the bleeding index on probing. It is concluded that the findings of the present study support the concept, which defends the fact, by which patients with periodontal disease, especially in advanced stages, there is an increase in the levels of systemic mediators of inflammation that, on the other hand, are risk factors for the development of chronic pathologies.
