Abstract

Lyme Borreliosis (LB) in Lugo healthcare area, as well as its clinical and serologic features. We tried also to evaluate whether our area is endemic or BL according to the established criteria. Material and methods: Retrospective study of the clinical records of patients with positive serologic tests for Borrelia detected in the Lugo healthcare area from 1995 to 2008. Results: 53 positive serologic tests for LB were registered, 42 (79 %) of whom fulfilled clinical criteria for LB. Most of cases came from rural areas. Three councils in the northeast of the area presented with the highest incidence per habitant. Cases were more common in summer. Eighty one per cent of patients showed neurological disease, mainly meningoradiculitis (27/34; 79%); twelve of them were associated to periferic facial palsy. Fifteen cases had Erytema Migrans, three of them isolated. Seven per cent of patients showed cardiac disease, two of them with atrioventricular block, and one case with myopericarditis. Joint involvement was infrequent (4´8%): 1 case of acute polyarthritis and 1 oligoarthicular chronic arthritis. Eighty one per cent of our patients received ceftriaxone and clinical outcome was favourable. Conclusions: The LB is not infrequent in Lugo healthcare area and some councils might be considered as endemic areas. Neurological involvement, mainly meningor adiculitis, is the most common clinical feature. Antibiotic prophylaxis could be considered, in selected cases of these areas, after a tick bite.
