Resumo
Mucormycosis is an opportunistic infection caused by fungi of Mucoraceae order which primarily infects immunocompromised patients. It is an acute, progressive and usually lethal process that affect to skin, subcutaneous tissue, paranasal sinuses, orbit, lung, gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system, producing in them a tissue necrosis secondary to ischemia by fungal vessel invasion. Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fulminant fungal infection, which mainly infects immunocompromised patients. The fungus invades the arteries leading to thrombosis that subsequently causes necrosis of hard and soft tissues. We report a case of sixty three year old man with acute myelogenous leukemia and severe neutropenia secondary to chemotherapy, with nasal congestion, bilateral obstruction, periorbital edema, necrosis and perforation of the nasal septum. Early diagnosis, often based on clinical suspicion, and prompt treatment with anfotericine B liposome and surgical debridement can reduce the mortality and morbidity of this lethal fungal infection
