Objective:Check if the training in SHORT FAMILY THERAPY to Primary Care professionals helps to decrease the prescription of psychotropic drugs. Design: Controlled and randomized experimental research study. Participants: The study population is Family doctors in the province of A Coruña (n = 754), after simple random sampling, we obtained 72 subjects randomly assigned to the experimental and control group. Intervention: The experimental group is given a training course in SHORT FAMILY THERAPY of 20 hours followed by 10 supervision workshops of 2 hours during one year. Main measurements: Prescription data are provided by the Subdirectorate General of Pharmacy of the Galician Health Service, broken down by active substance. The hypotheses are verified with the SPSS statistics 21 using the t-student test for significance of Mean Difference. Results: The pharmacological prescription increases during the period observed in the two groups; however, there are differences in this increase: in the experimental group, the prescription of antidepressants increases and the hypnotic, anxiolytic and antipsychotic drugs remain constant; In the control increases the prescription in the four pharmacological groups and the one of antidepresivos increases more than in the experimental one. There is a tendency for the control group to increase the pharmacological prescription more than the experimental one in all groups of psychoactive drugs analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: It seems possible to decrease prescription, and consequently expenditure, with adequate training of family physicians in psychotherapies such as SHORT FAMILY THERAPY.
