Abstract

Anxiety represents a negative effect on the anesthetic-surgical experience. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of an hypnotic metaphor in the anxiety of pediatric patients. Methods: This is a Quasi-experimental study, we included 19 patients assigned to the experimental group (listened to the metaphor) and 19 to the control group (without intervention) ages 7 to 12 years old, undergoing elective orthopedic surgery. Anxiety levels were measured using the STAIC Trait-State Scale when they enter to the hospital and before entering to the operating room and parental separation was measured with the Modified Yale Anxiety Scale. Results: There was a significant Mann Whitney U-test (p:0.0331) for changes in state anxiety between hospital admission and prior to surgery in control group vrs experimental. No similar results for Modified Yale Scale between study groups. Conclusion: the intervention was effective to reduce state anxiety and we suggest its application at time of surgical programming
