Resumo

Introduction: Anthropometric study in the city of Vigo, in schoolchildren of the first stage of adolescence, to identify the risk of obesity by comparing different indices. Methods: Prevalence study in May-June 2009 in students from 1st to 4th year (12-16 years) of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) in Vigo. A stratified sampling was carried out by type of center and course and it was randomized by clusters (educational center). Variables: age (years), sex (man and woman), country of origin, height (cm), waist circumference (cm), hip circumference (cm), percentage of fat, water and lean mass by impedance, body mass index (BMI), waist-height index (ICA), waist-hip index (ICC). A descriptive, bivariate analysis (chi-square and t-Student or Anova) and classification with ROC curves (ICC, ICA, BMI with impedance) was performed. The analysis were carried out with R-studio. Results: 577 students were analyzed, 48.7% girls and 51.3% boys; 56.7% went to public schools. 93.9% were Spanish and almost all were between 11 and 15 years old (90.7%). The distribution between courses did not show significant differences. The prevalence of being at risk of being overweight was 29.0% (47.8% women and 11.3% men). The area under the curve (AUC) was 84.6% for BMI and 78.12% for ICA with respect to the percentage of fat by impedance, and 56.6% for ICC. Conclusions: The prevalence figures are considerable and have probably increased, as indicated by later studies. The BMI and ICA are simple and reliable methods to identify overweight in people between 12 and 16 years of age.
