Abstract Epidemiology Chronic pain is a disease in itself with a high prevalence and a strong economic impact and quality of life. Concept Currently we talk about pain «chronification» and not of chronic pain itself. Therefore, the importance of a correct treatment of acute pain, implementing pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures preventing its persistence overtime. Diagnosis A correct diagnostic orientation is the first step for fast and effective pain management. Opioid It is necessary to implement strategies for the rational use of opioids, with a slow rise and the lowest effective dose to avoid the problems associated with their use and improve risk-benefit balance. Fourth step It is important to know the fourth step techniques available to help control pain and criteria for referral to a pain clinic.
