Resumo

Objective Our aim was to study mortality caused by HIV/aids in Galicia, from 1984 until 2008, and its distribution by age and gender. Methods This is an ecological descriptive study and studied population is resident population of Galicia during 1984-2008. The variables of this study: gender, age and cause of death. Results In 2008, 65 persons died in Galicia due to HIV/aids, therefore the mortality rate (MR) was 2.4 deaths per 100,000 population which was lower than Spanish MR (2.7). The mean age was 45.0 years. The main age group in men was 40-44 years (21 cases; 39.6%) compared to 35-39 years (6 cases; 50.0%) in women. From 1984 to 2008, in Galicia, 2,678 persons died due to HIV/aids. In 1995, deaths peaked at 293 so HIV/aids mortality rate was 10.6. In Galicia and Spain, from 1995 to 1998, the number of deaths due to HIV/aids decreased 68% and from 1999 to 2008, mortality rate due to HIV/aids decreased slowler. Conclusion In 2008, MR of Galicia, due to HIV/aids, is lower than MR of Spain. MR due to HIV/aids in Galician women is lower than Galician men although the average year of death in Galician women was five years younger than Galician men. Trend of HIV/aids mortality was the same in Galicia and Spain during 1984-2008
