Resumo

Background. Objectives of the study were to determine the health care problems of terminal six months before death and the use of health care facilities during that period. Methods. 58 patients that had died of neoplasms during the period 1990-June 1994 in Cambre country were included. A retrospective follow-up study since death to six month before was completed. Results. Up to 30.2% were diagnosed in Cambre Health Care Center. 70.9%died at home. 56% did not required care in hospital during that period. Pain is the most persistent problem (88.2%) which had been associated with a increased number of visits to the health care center. The use of morphine and nasograstric feeding increased the number of visits (p<0.05). Taken into account age, sex and other diseases, the use of opiates was the variable that increased the number of visits. Conclusions. The study reflects the role of primary health care professionals in the care of terminal patients with cander. Palliative attention keeping patients in their own environment with the best quality of life is one of our current activities
