Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the effect of restrictive use of overgowns on visitors over infection rate in ICU facing its sistematic use. Design: Descriptive study before-after two years of investigation (a pre-intervention year and post). Subjects: ICU visitors. Intervention: Restrictive policy of overgown use in ICU visitors. Main measures: Rate of infection: number of infection per 100 patients. Number of used overgowns and cost. Finding: During the pre-use period, there were 87 infections per 100 patients vs. 95 infections per 100 patients. There were not significant differences. During the first period, 12490 overgowns sere consumed and 4980 during the second. Direct savings rose to 1302 . Conclusion: There are not evidences that may support sistematic use of overgown in ICU by the visitors.
