Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate Ceroitec® chlorhexidine-thymol varnish, reapplied every three months over a 24 month period, and determine its effectiveness in the prevention of caries in permanent first molars among schoolchildren age 6 to 7 in relation with their previous experience with caries. Methods: 229 children from a lower-middle socioeconomic level, attending 10 separate first grade classes, were distributed at random into two groups: the varnish group (n= 113) and the control group (n= 116). The children in the varnish group received topical applications of Ceroitec chlorbexidine-thymol varnish on all teeth and surfaces every three months. The data on caries were collected at the beginning of the study and each six months thereafter, using WHO criterla, for both tbe control group and the varnish group. Results: The prevalence of caries in primary and permanent teeth showed no significant differences between the two groups at the onset of the study period. After twenty-four months, the children in the varnish group who had a dft of 0 at baseline showed a significantly lower (p<. 0.05) incidence of carious surfaces in permanent first molars when compared with the control group. The reduction percentage in carious surfaces was 77.5% Conclusions: The application of chlorhexidine varnish every third month over two years can be said to reduce surfaces carious in the permanent first molars of schoolchildren age 6 to 7 with no previous caries experience in primary teeth
