Abstract
Spinal cord injury is an unexpected event that radically modifies the relationship with one’s own body and forces changes in various areas of life. This article offers a description of the characteristics of spinal cord injury and its epidemiology in Galicia. It also contains information on various psychological theories on the process of adaptation, coping styles and emotional adjustment. Finally, we are provided with a general framework of psychotherapeutic interventions in the processes of living with the disease based on the work carried out by the clinical psychologist in the consultation-liaison service.
