Resumo

Introduction: The Day Centre of Conxo Psychiatric Hospital operates like a support service to patients suffering severe mental illness that have impairments to reach effective integration in the community. After more than twenty years since its opening, it has demonstrated its efficacy. In the present work we ask about the factors that could explain these results and could be the most important to describe their interventions, the characteristics that would be taken into account for its replication and to teach new workers. Methodology: We choose a qualitative design, through the analysis of contents of the interviews with patients and workers with responsibility in the day centre. Results: Ten workers and twenty patients were included. In the interviews with workers, we considered a previous theoretical frame in which the attitudes to become linked to the others and reach therapy compliance were central to explain the efficacy of the service. The characteristics of the actual workers, the support to essential needs, the respect and the flexibility were the principal factors that emerged from the analysis. Different topics were identified in the interviews with patients. They were considered in couples like insanity/treatment, freedom/coercion or material needs/emotional needs. Conclusions: qualitative methods were useful to obtain valuable information about the functioning of services that treats people suffering severe mental illness and their activity. By means of this analysis, it would be possible the preparation of a guide to new workers that will be integrated in the day centre team, very important to maintain the identity of the service.
